Vasectomy ReversalWhy Choose Dr. Spitz for Vasectomy Reversal?
A vasectomy doesn't have to be permanent. If your circumstances have changed and you want to restore your fertility, a vasectomy reversal is possible. Dr Aaron Spitz is one of the most experienced urologists in the nation specializing in advanced microsurgical techniques to reconnect the vas deferens and restore the flow of sperm, giving you the best chance at natural conception.
What Is a Vasectomy Reversal?
A vasectomy reversal is a surgical procedure designed to restore the flow of sperm to the semen after a previous vasectomy. This is achieved by reconnecting the vas deferens—the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles—using highly precise microsurgical techniques.
Two Types of Vasectomy Reversal
There are two main surgical techniques for reversing a vasectomy:
1. Vasovasostomy
This is the most common approach and involves directly reconnecting the severed ends of the vas deferens. When sperm is present in the fluid from the vas deferens at the time of surgery, a vasovasostomy is typically performed.
2. Vasoepididymostomy
In some cases, scar tissue or blockages in the epididymis (where sperm matures) prevent sperm from reaching the vas deferens. When this occurs, a vasoepididymostomy may be necessary. This advanced procedure creates a direct connection between the vas deferens and the epididymis, bypassing the blockage and allowing sperm to flow again. Our surgeon is highly experienced in both procedures and determines the appropriate technique during surgery for the highest possible success rate.
Optional Sperm Freezing During Vasectomy Reversal
For added peace of mind, we offer the option to retrieve and freeze sperm during the vasectomy reversal procedure. This ensures that even if sperm does not return, the option of IVF- ICSI (in vitro fertility with intracytoplasmic sperm injection) can still be pursued without the need for an additional procedure to retrieve sperm.
Who Is a Candidate?
Most men who have had a vasectomy are candidates for reversal—even years later. Factors such as time since the vasectomy and overall sperm health can influence success, but modern microsurgical techniques often provide excellent outcomes.
