Male Infertility Affects Many Men

Male Infertility

Wanting a family is a natural human longing, but many couples face obstacles to that dream. About one third of couples will face infertility. Male infertility plays a role in up to half of these couples. Many Doctors are unfamiliar with male infertility and even urologists may ignore it or undertreat it. A referral to the In vitro fertility (IVF) clinic is often the first and only solution offered by doctors. Although there are many excellent IVF clinics in Southern California, there are only a handful of male fertility specialists and Dr Spitz is amongst the most experienced.

Male infertility may result from a variety of known causes. The list includes but is not limited to:

  • vasectomy
  • Varicoceles (enlarged veins around the testicle)
  • History of undescended testicle
  • Trauma
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Use of testosterone and steroids
  • Genetic causes
  • Disorders of ejaculation
  • Side effects from chemotherapy
  • Radiation or other medications
  • Side effects from surgery
  • Environmental exposures
  • Poor lifestyle choices

In some cases the cause may be unclear. Treatments vary depending on the underlying condition and may include medications, surgery, or life style modification. The vast majority of men can be helped and couples enabled to achieve their dream of having a family.

Dr. Spitz sees many couples in his fertility clinic for whom he is able to provide an alternative to IVF or maximize the chances of success with IVF by ensuring the sperm is as healthy as possible. We have helped thousands of men in southern California on their fertility journey.

IVF and IUI

Many couples faced with male factor infertility are advised to go straight to IVF. Although IVF is very effective, it is also expensive, complex, and not without risks. In many cases the male factor infertility can be improved allowing the couple the opportunity to have a child naturally without the need for IVF. In some cases male factor may be improved enough to avoid IVF but still allow for IUI (intrauterine insemination) which is less expensive and less complex. There are men, however, whose male infertility is ultimately best managed with IVF. For these men, treatment of their underlying infertility may not be sufficient to allow for natural conception but may be important in insuring the best possible outcome with IVF. Additionally, the woman's underlying fertility is an important consideration as well. Some women may have fertility issues that also need to be addressed by their fertility specialist and they may require IUI (intrauterine insemination) or IVF (in vitro fertilization). In these cases, Dr. Spitz coordinates with all the best female fertility clinics in the region to maximize the couple's fertility.
